Clinical Review of the Geriatric Patient Over 60 Years of Age

Abstract
This study is an analysis of 285 admitted patients and 221 operations which were performed in 211 patients over 60 years of age in the department of Surg. Chonnam University Hospital during period of 6 years and 6 months from Jan, 1968 to June, 1974. The results were as follows:
1) Hospitalization rate of aged was increased and it¢¥s increasing gate was much more higher than that of total age group. Operation rate of aged patient¢¥s was high than that of total age group but increase in each year, was not seen.
2) Sex distribution was 185 males (65%) and 100 females (35%).
3) Average duration of admission was 14.8 days in operative patients and 5.3 days in nonop-erative patients. Admitted patients via E.R. were 104 (37%) and via O.P.D. or other departments were 181 patients (63%).
4) Emergency operations were 71 cases (32%) and elective operations were 150 cases (68%).
5) According to disease analysis, tumor group was 121 cases (42%), of which 113 cases (93% of tumor group) were malignant and nontumor diseases were 164 cases (58%). The most common disease was" stomach ca. In nontumor group, peptic ulcer of total admitted patients and biliary tract disease of operative, patients were the most common one.
6) Coexistent disease was noticed in 113 patients (40%) but number of coexistent disease was 197 because 69 patients (42%) had more than two coexistent disease. The most common coexistent disease was pulmonary system and next was cardiovascular system but arteriosclerotic heart disease was only one case compaired to important coexistant disease in foreigner reports.
7) Postoperative complications were developed in 94 patients (42%) and wound complication was the most common one.
8)- postoperative mortality rate was 10.4% of which 24.0% in emergency operation, 3.3% in elective operation. If grave patients on discharge were contained, mortality rate would be much more higher than all other reports in our country. Especially in 10 reoperative patients, the hig-hest mortality rate about 40% was noticed.
9) The most common cause of postoperative death was bleeding and sepsis compared to pulmonary complication of other reports in our country.
10) In 49% of nonoperative patients who were, absolutely indicated in operation, they were unfortunately discharged without operation received because of poor economic condition.
